Cold Plunge Chillers Explained: Do You Need One? (Penguin Chillers, Cryospring and More)

September 27, 2026 2 min read

Short answer: A chiller pumps your tub water through a refrigeration unit and returns it cold, holding the temperature you set and often filtering the water. You do not need one to start, but it removes the ice cost and gives repeatable temperatures. Match the chiller to your tub's volume and your climate, and check power, filtration and warranty.

How a chiller works

  • A pump circulates tub water through the unit.
  • A refrigeration circuit removes heat from the water.
  • Filtration, and on some units UV or ozone, keeps the water clean.
  • A controller holds the temperature you set. Some also heat.

How to size and choose

  1. Volume. Know your tub's gallons. The Coldture Chiller Pro is rated up to 100 gallons.
  2. Ambient temperature. Hot climates and sunny placements make the chiller work harder.
  3. Cooling speed. Ask how fast it cools. The Polar Elite One lists up to 5°F per hour.
  4. Filtration. Look for filters, UV or ozone.
  5. Heating. Cold/Heat models add warm sessions.
  6. Power. Check the voltage and outlet, and use ground-fault protection.
  7. Support. Ask about warranty and service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chiller for a cold plunge?

No, ice works. A chiller holds a set temperature, filters the water and saves the cost of ice.

Can I add a chiller to my own tub?

Yes. Standalone chillers from Coldture, Dynamic Cold Therapy, Dundalk and Penguin Chillers connect to a compatible tub. Match the chiller's rated capacity to your tub's volume.
