How Often and How Long Should You Use Red Light Therapy?

September 27, 2026 2 min read

Short answer: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for session length and how often to use your device. Built-in timers on devices we carry range from 10 to 20 minutes, and irradiance, distance and the area treated all affect the dose. More time is not automatically better.

Last reviewed: September 2026. Timers come from product listings. Educational only, not medical advice. See our disclaimer.

Factors that change the answer

  • Irradiance. A more powerful device reaches a given dose sooner. See irradiance and dose explained.
  • Distance. Power drops as you move away from the LEDs.
  • Area and device type. Beds, pads and handhelds are used differently.
  • Your skin and health. A doctor can advise if you have a condition.

Building a routine

  1. Start with the manufacturer's recommended session and frequency.
  2. Use the same time of day when you can, so it is easy to keep.
  3. Note how your skin responds, and back off if you see irritation.
  4. Keep a simple log of date, device and time.

Signs to stop

  • Redness, burning or blistering.
  • Headache or eye discomfort.
  • Any reaction that worries you.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a red light therapy session be?

Follow your device's timer and manual. Built-in timers on devices we carry run from 10 to 20 minutes.

Is longer better?

Not necessarily. Dose depends on irradiance, distance and time, and extending sessions past the manufacturer's guidance is not recommended.
