Ice Bath vs Chilled Cold Plunge: What Actually Changes

September 27, 2026 2 min read

Short answer: An ice bath is a tub, water and ice, and costs the least to start. A chilled cold plunge adds a chiller and filtration so the water stays cold and cleaner without hauling ice. Tubs alone start around $800 to $1,300 on our site, while chilled systems start around $2,300 for a chiller and $3,700 for a complete inflatable system, and go past $9,000. What you pay for is convenience and temperature control.

Side by side

Factor Ice bath (tub and ice) Chilled cold plunge
Upfront cost Lowest, for example the Dreampod Flex tub ($800), Cryospring Portable Ice Bath ($890) or Ice Barrel 300 ($1,299.99) Chiller alone from about $2,300 (for example the Penguin Chillers chiller), complete systems from about $3,700
Ongoing cost Ice, which varies with your climate and season Electricity; one manufacturer estimates $18 to $28 a month at $0.12 per kWh for a 3/4 HP unit
Temperature control You adjust with ice and stir Set a target; the chiller holds it
Water quality Change often; cold water slows but does not stop growth Filtration and sanitation such as ozone or a stabilizer help, but you still need to maintain it
Setup Fill and add ice Fill, power, plumb hoses; some need a GFCI outlet
Portability High Moderate; chiller adds weight and a power need

How to decide

  1. How often will you plunge? Occasional users may be fine with ice. Frequent users usually get tired of buying and hauling ice.
  2. What is your climate? In warm weather, ice melts faster.
  3. Where will it live? Chillers need power and airflow.
  4. Do you want a path to upgrade? A chiller-ready tub such as the Ice Barrel lets you start with ice and add a chiller later.

Safety is the same either way

Cold-water immersion carries risks whatever equipment you use. Do not plunge alone when you are new to it, and talk to your physician if you have heart or circulatory conditions. See cold plunge safety and temperature and time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chiller worth it?

If you plunge often or live somewhere warm, many owners find a chiller more convenient than ice. If you plunge rarely, ice may be enough.

Can I add a chiller to an ice bath later?

Only if the tub is built for it. The Ice Barrel 300 is chiller-ready with bulkheads included. Check compatibility before buying a chiller.

Cold-water immersion can be dangerous for some people. Consult a physician before use, especially with heart or circulatory conditions, and do not plunge alone when you are new to it. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.
