Hyperbaric Chamber Comfort: Claustrophobia, Ear Pressure and Layout

September 27, 2026 2 min read

Short answer: If you feel enclosed easily, look at windows, width and posture. Wider chambers such as the Summit to Sea Grand Dive Pro Plus 60, upright models such as the Vertical Dive 40, and chambers with several windows such as the OxyRevo Heal40 (four windows) can feel more open. Ear pressure is a common experience when pressure changes, and your physician can tell you how to handle it. Learn how to release pressure quickly before your first session.

Practical tips

  1. Try sitting in a similar-sized space, or ask about a display model, before buying.
  2. Start with short sessions if the manual and your physician allow it.
  3. Know how the release valve works before you close the chamber.
  4. Choose a room with light and airflow, and keep someone in the home for your first sessions.

Ear pressure

Pressure changes can be felt in the ears, similar to a flight or a dive. Manufacturers generally describe pressurizing gradually and following the manual. If you have ear, sinus or breathing conditions, or if a session is painful, stop, release pressure as instructed and ask your physician before continuing. See what to expect in a first session and chamber safety.

See horizontal vs. vertical.

Frequently asked questions

What if I feel claustrophobic inside a chamber?

Consider a wider or upright design with windows, learn the release procedure and talk to your physician. Do not use a chamber if you feel unsafe.

Is ear pressure normal?

Pressure sensations in the ears are common when pressure changes. Pain is a reason to stop and ask your physician.

A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized, oxygen-enriched environment. Use only as directed in the manufacturer's manual, keep flames, sparks and heat sources away, and consult a physician before use. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.
