Mild Hyperbaric Chamber Buyer's Guide: What to Know Before You Spend $8K–$20K

Short answer: Across the six brands we carry, soft-shell home chambers run from about $4,095 to $22,990 and hard-shell chambers from about $25,299 to $82,000. The Summit to Sea line, which this guide covers in most detail, runs about $8,000 to $20,000 and holds 1.3 ATA (4.4 PSI). Whether an oxygen concentrator comes with the chamber depends on the brand: Summit to Sea does not include one, Newtowne lists it as an optional add-on, and Macy-Pan, OxyRevo and Oxyair list one with their chambers. Talk to your physician first: per the manufacturers, Summit to Sea and Newtowne chambers require a prescription to purchase.

Step 1: Talk to your physician before you shop

Summit to Sea describes its chambers as Class II devices and requires a prescription to purchase one, except for health clinics. Newtowne states that its chambers are FDA cleared under 510(k) K051759 and require a prescription. Check the same for every other brand. A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized environment, and some conditions make pressure changes risky. Getting medical guidance first also tells you whether a chamber makes sense for you at all. Step 2: Budget for more than the chamber

• The chamber. See the brand table and the Summit to Sea table below.
• An oxygen concentrator, if it is not included. Summit to Sea specifies a 10 LPM at 20 PSI unit that is required and not included, so price it separately. Newtowne's concentrator is an optional add-on. Macy-Pan, OxyRevo and Oxyair list a concentrator with the chamber.
• Power. The Summit to Sea vertical models run on a standard 15 to 20 amp outlet. The Grand Dive Vertical 54″ and Grand Dive Pro 46″ draw about 200 watts.
• Space. Measure the room, doorways and the route the boxed chamber will take. The largest Summit to Sea chamber is 103″ long.
• Warranty. Each Summit to Sea chamber below carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty. Newtowne lists 2 years and Macy-Pan lists 24 months.

Step 3: Decide who and how

• How many people will use it? Sizes range from one adult to two or three adults, and multiplace hard-shell chambers hold more.
• Lying down or sitting up? Horizontal chambers suit lying or reclining. Vertical and sitting chambers let you sit in a chair, work at a desk or stand.
• Does anyone need wheelchair, gurney or stretcher access? Several models are built for it. See accessible chambers.

Questions to ask any seller

1. What is the working pressure, and how is it regulated (valves, gauges, alarms)?
2. Are the compressors redundant, and is there a power-monitoring alarm?
3. What is the regulatory status, and is a prescription required?
4. Is an oxygen concentrator included, and at what flow rate? If not, which one do I need?
5. What does the warranty cover, and who services it?
6. What ships in the box (frame, mattress, gauges, carrying case)?
7. What support do I get with setup and training?

Red flags

• Promises to cure or treat specific diseases. Sellers should not make medical claims for these devices.
• No mention of a prescription, regulatory status or the manufacturer's manual.
• A price that leaves out the oxygen source without saying so.
• No named warranty term or service contact.
