Hyperbaric Chamber Guide
Short answer: A home (mild) hyperbaric chamber is a soft-shell chamber that raises the air pressure around you, typically to 1.3 to about 1.5 ATA (4.4 to about 7.4 PSI above room pressure). You breathe oxygen from a concentrator through a mask, and whether the concentrator comes with the chamber depends on the brand. What a mild hyperbaric chamber is
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) means breathing oxygen-enriched air inside a chamber that is pressurized above normal atmospheric pressure. Hospital chambers are rigid vessels that operate at higher pressures. A mild (or soft-shell) chamber is a zippered, inflatable chamber on a frame that reaches a lower pressure and is designed for home use.
A soft-shell chamber is not a hospital chamber. It reaches a much lower pressure, and it should not be treated as a substitute for medical care. What people do with it at home, and why, is a conversation to have with a physician.

ATA stands for atmospheres absolute. 1.0 ATA is normal air pressure at sea level. Every chamber pressure is described as a multiple of that. See our full explainer on pressure levels.

Prescription and regulation
Per the manufacturer, Summit to Sea chambers are Class II devices, and a prescription is required to purchase one (health clinics are excepted). Per the manufacturer, Newtowne chambers are FDA cleared under 510(k) K051759 and a prescription is required to purchase them. Macy-Pan lists ISO and CE standards for its chambers. Check the requirement for OxyRevo, Oxyair and Titan, since it varies by manufacturer.
The FDA clears hyperbaric chambers for a specific list of medical conditions, such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and certain non-healing wounds. Using a chamber for other purposes falls outside those clearances, and the FDA has cautioned consumers about unproven claims. We do not make medical claims about these chambers. What you need besides the chamber
- An oxygen source. This varies by brand. Summit to Sea specifies a 10 LPM at 20 PSI oxygen generator that is required and not included. Newtowne lists its concentrator as an optional add-on (it recommends a 10 L unit at 7 to 9 LPM). Macy-Pan, OxyRevo and Oxyair list a concentrator with their chambers. See how the system works.
- Power. The Summit to Sea vertical models run on a standard 15 to 20 amp outlet. The Grand Dive Vertical 54″ and Grand Dive Pro 46″ draw about 200 watts. Newtowne lists a 120 V household outlet.
- Floor space and a clear path. Measure the room, the doorway and the route the boxed chamber will travel. See the setup guide.
- A safe location. Keep flames, sparks and heat sources away from the chamber and the oxygen equipment.
Every Summit to Sea chamber carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty and includes dual (redundant) compressors, a frame and a carrying bag or case. Newtowne lists a 2-year warranty and Macy-Pan lists 24 months.

A quick way to narrow it down
- Tight on space, one user: Shallow Dive 26″, or a Newtowne C4-27.
- A parent and child, or more room to sit up: Dive 33″.
- Two or three people: Grand Dive 40″ or a Macy-Pan ST2200 Pro. See chambers for two.

Horizontal or vertical?
Horizontal chambers let you lie down or recline on a mattress. They need more floor length, up to about 8.5 feet for the largest.
Vertical and sitting chambers let you sit in a chair, work at a desk or stand. Walk-in vertical models need ceiling height of 6.5 to 7 feet or more, and suit people who find climbing in and out of a horizontal chamber difficult. See horizontal vs. vertical.
Safety essentials
- A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized environment. Use it only as directed in the manufacturer's manual.
- Oxygen-enriched environments raise fire risk. Keep flames, sparks and heat sources away, and follow the manual's rules on materials and electronics inside.
- Changes in pressure can cause ear or sinus discomfort. Follow the manual's pressurization steps and stop if you feel pain.
- Some conditions, such as an untreated collapsed lung, are reasons not to use a chamber, and many others need a physician's judgment. Check with your doctor first.

Do I need a prescription to buy a home hyperbaric chamber?
Per the manufacturers, Summit to Sea and Newtowne chambers require a prescription to purchase (Summit to Sea excepts health clinics). Check the requirement for any other brand, and ask your physician.
Is a home chamber the same as hospital hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
No. Hospital chambers are rigid and operate at higher pressures. A soft-shell home chamber runs at about 1.3 to 1.5 ATA. Its use is a decision to make with your physician.
What else do I need to buy with the chamber?
An oxygen source, a suitable space and an outlet. Summit to Sea does not include an oxygen generator, Newtowne lists a concentrator as an optional add-on, and Macy-Pan, OxyRevo and Oxyair list a concentrator with their chambers. Check each listing.
